Angela Deutschmann Newsletter
January 2011
Hi everyone
We enrolled our shiny 5-year old in Grade R a week ago and I found
myself blissfully happy as I marked his uniform, met his teacher and
pinned the year’s schedule up in our kitchen. Instead of being
embarrassed at my evident inner Nerd, a friend suggested I look a little
further than just that cliched label. The truth is I LOVE learning, the
kind of people that are attracted to teaching and environments that
exist to develop people gently and with fun. Joshua’s school journey has
reminded me of these Joys and to keep on reinvesting in them (not to
mention in stationery!). It is possible to have a career – even better,
a life – that is utterly defined by what makes your heart smile. I’m
assisting more and more clients to walk this route, which is also risky,
scary and more demanding than you ever thought.
If this is appealing, why not come and see me for a coaching session so
we can map out a rational - but passionate - new way for you this year.
What may also help is the JoyMap workshop on Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2
February where we will answer ten interesting, tough questions about who
you really want to be.
I’m delighted to announce that tickets have gone on sale for A Morning
of Joy, taking place at the Morrells boutique hotel in Northcliff on on
Saturday 12 February 2011 at 09.30. This event will be a chance to set
your, or your team’s, year off on an intentional note of joyful
creating. You’ll be treated to surprises, gift bags, scrumptious lunch
in a gorgeous setting and a a 2-hour talk in which I will share
everything I have learnt about Joy and how to create it. 2011 will not
be the same afterwards!
Thanks to those who joined us for the very special 2011 New Year reading
in Constantia. A beautiful space with beautiful people was bound to
allow for a beautiful conversation – and it did. Insights From the Edge
subscribers have received this reading. Those who would like to purchase
the audio file, transcription and notes can do so from our
online store.
A new series of Spiritual Growth Clubs begins soon. Please contact me
ASAP if you’d still like to be a part of this 12 month journey into self
awareness and real support. Details of all these events can be found
below. Also below are a few of my Anti-Resolutions.
I have some Bird Cards in stock (first and second editions) ‘though they
are flying out my office, so to speak, so please order soon if you’d
like a set of these magnificent tools for reflection.
As you may have noticed, our newsletter is now being handled by the My
List guys. Please click on the update details link to make sure we can
direct these mails to you in the the way you’d most appreciate.
Here’s to a lighter and happier body, mind, heart, spirit and planet in
2011.
Much love
Angela

JoyMap Workshop – leave resolutions behind once and for all!
New Year’s resolutions are likely to fail for two reasons: firstly, they are usually based on what you think you should do, rather than what you deeply want to do. In other words, the goals are set only from your head. Failure to sustain these resolutions breeds a sense of self-recrimination, your esteem drops and a cycle of subtle disappointment begins. Secondly, even when your goals are truly aligned with your joy, they may be unrealistic and difficult to integrate into your life as it is now. Why not do it differently and begin to sculpt your life – practically - from joy?
I have designed a number of unusual, innovative processes to assist you
to see what you really want (which is notoriously difficult to do) and
to find real, creative and achievable ways to integrate this into your
current life with nothing needing to change.
‘Being the OCD personality type, I am constantly making lists and
working towards “goals” and setting new year’s resolutions throughout
the year, because how else can a person exist…. Ha ha – I found a
delicious way yesterday…I spent the day with Angela, a friend and wise
woman, and started learning about me and what I am passionate about as
opposed to what I think or believe I have to be passionate about…
The word goal didn’t even enter my mind and yet I have these BIG dreams
that I announced yesterday and have started towards them…not because I
have to, but because I cannot wait any longer …
I would love for you all to experience this joy and excitement…Go on,
give it a bash – the way you look at your life for the next year will
astound you!’
‘I am still taking in the incredible gift of the JoyMap workshop. I
found the insights I gained profound and far reaching in terms of how I
want to see my life unfolding. It certainly has a) given me permission
to focus on my joy without feeling guilty and b) made joy so much more
of a focus in my day to day life’

Embody
You can download a free talk about a Embody from our website, which speaks of the origin and philosophy
of the process, and answers lots of questions.
The Embody workshop is the result of my personal pain about my body. For
years I was so confident, sure and present in my mind and spirituality
and at the same time, so ashamed, disconnected and undeveloped in my
body. I opened up all this pain and transformed it into an exceptionally
powerful and unique workshop that puts you back in touch, in
conversation and in love with your body even if you haven’t been there
for years.
Our bodies, like everything else, are communicators to us. They
communicate our divinity, in an immediate, uncomplicated manner. Our
bodies are as profound a source of wisdom to us as our minds and
spirits. They are faithfully attuned to our highest path, even though we
are ashamed of them, hate them and, more often that not, attempt to
control their expression.
It is not us who are meant to shape our bodies, it is our bodies which
are meant to shape us
If you are brave enough to fully see and own your own body,
compassionate enough to accept the bodies of others and wild enough to
fall unconditionally in love with your body – forever - then I invite
you to Embody.
Two recent graduates’ experiences:
Wow what an experience, what a journey!
When my friend mentioned embody to me I knew instantly this was
something my soul was calling for. I was tired of controlling my weight
and quite frankly I was no longer getting even the temporary successes.
I could not have imagined what was in store for me. The processes were
so powerful, the environment was supportive and beautiful. Angela’s
guidance, and the group’s support helped me go through stuff that I had
hidden somewhere in my mind not realizing how it was contributing to my
habits of not honoring myself and in particular my body. I got insights
on how this cascaded to other areas of my life and how I limited my joy.
Some of processes were such fun, I have not danced so much in a long
time and laughed so much.
I now have a renewed sense of identity and beauty. I feel energetic, light and my mind is sharp, work flows and I feel much more productive and present in my activities.
I got a complement from a neighbor who had not seen me for a couple
of weeks on how beautiful I looked and were it not for the lines that
she could see on my face she said, she would have thought I had plastic
surgery.
Oh! Hubby is just too happy to have his wife relaxed and joyful. He says
anytime I wish to go for another Embody he will sponsor!
I now have the dance teacher’s number to call this afternoon and the
name of the shop to buy my dancing shoes. Xoli
Embody allowed me to release and let go of past anger, shame and blame;
issues which I didn’t even know I was holding onto. My life post-embody
has been a shedding of protective walls and defences...intense, real yet
exciting. Getting in touch with my body had allowed me to let go of the
safety of my mind and intellect; and reconnect with my emotion, passion
and creativity. Deirdre

Spiritual Growth Clubs
‘Having worked with Angela this past year has been an amazing
experience. I use the word experience as through her processes and
methodology I have been able to move from the intellectualising and the
cognitive awareness that I used to deal with life and actually start to
feel, emote and engage totally differently and live the aspect of
“Experience trumps Awareness”. It has been an amazing journey for me to
get to this place, it is through her brilliant application of Ontology
that has made this possible. Getting to this point has added huge value
to not only my life but has taken my coaching to a whole new level.
Spending time with the group each month and ending off with our own
tailor-made Jump workshop has been invaluable to me on so many levels
and has given me a lucid indication of where my Joy lies. I have had a
profound shift based directly on the workshop and know that choices that
I have made in the days, weeks and month following the workshop have
been done with clarity and certainty that they not only add my Joy but I
am liberated to follow and commit to it.’ Gavin, Ontological Coach
An increasing number of people are committing themselves to conscious,
responsible and empowered living. The number and variety of spiritual
workshops and therapies attest to this. Yet, more is required to
manifest awareness in action than just a once-off intervention. Personal
transformation is a dynamic and ongoing process and requires consistent
integration and support, whether that is in the form of honest feedback,
access to new knowledge or motivation. Often we attempt, or feel we are
forced, to pursue our spiritual development in isolation. Besides the
fact that this reinforces a consciousness of separation, it can also
leave us blinkered to our own stumbling blocks or gifts or next steps.
My popular Spiritual Growth Clubs provide a rare opportunity to walk
your personal path in fellowship with like-minded people who are open to
learning, sharing and growing as much as you are. They also come with
expert facilitation and access to all the new insight with which I work.
Contact Garrick before 30 April to register for a 2011 group (Johannesburg only) or to learn more.
‘It has been very difficult to put into words how best to describe my experience in a Growth Club. The Growth Club provided me with a safe and respectful space to express my deepest pain and emotions - a place to be real, raw and authentic. Through this year long process I was able to grow, to shift, to gain such huge awareness about myself, learning to trust myself, to respect and honour my intuition and to fully experience the rawest of emotions that I would ordinarily never have had the space to do so. Angela’s exceptionally respectful and honouring approach is hugely appreciated and her gentleness and beauty permeates in everything. I thank her for giving me the cushion to "land safely" through the year and my Jump process and to gain inner strength and depth. I value the privilege of having been given this blessing to learn and grow with her. A very privileged Club to be in. Thank you’ Ilana, owner Magical Moments

Insights From the Edge in 2011
January 2011: ‘The Power of With’ is a daring invitation into living a ‘with’ life instead of a ‘without life’. This reading makes it clear that the only way to do this is to stop, turn around and face whatever you have been running from, what it is you most fear. The illusionary nature of a fear can only be seen and be dissolved when you are intimately close with it. In that moment, you choose a ‘with path’ (instead of flight or fight) and Divinity is experienced profoundly.
Previous Insights From the Edge
March 2010: ‘The Walk of Life’ – an interactive visualisation
offering 23 new, insightful perspectives on how we choose, listen and
live on a daily basis
April 2010: ‘The Art of Surrender’ - explains clearly what surrender is
and isn’t, lists the Four Steps to Surrender as well as its magnificent
effects: stillness, grace and being in the middle of the flow of love.
May 2010: ‘Living Lightly’ - more than just inviting us to recognise
that in a state of play we are more receptive to learning, creativity,
risk and imagination, this teaching takes the notion of lightness right
to the cliff-edge when it asks whether we will play our big roles in
life better or worse after putting down our ‘backpack full of rocks’
(burdens).
June 2010: ‘Celebrating the Question’ calls on us to value our questions
as the mechanism for forward movement and to be careful of overvaluing
answers / solutions as well as the providers of answers / solutions i.e.
our teachers. The reading also raises the question of whether the
purpose of life is to achieve something and explains clearly the three
effects of being motivated by a destination, rather than a deepening.
August 2010: ‘Desire and Sexuality’ begins by outlining three truths
that help us navigate with our desires without being consumed by them –
a very useful blending of Buddhist observation with recent teachings on
Joy. The teaching then moves on to a celebration of human sexuality and
intimacy – stretching these ideas far beyond the ways in which we
regularly express / contain ourselves in this area
September 2010: ‘The Camino and The Walking Stick’ is a magnificent
system for stillness. It uses the age-old concept of a pilgrimage, or
Camino, and inverts this to invite you onto an inward walk, a journey to
your own core. As part of this teaching there is a separate
visualisation called The Six Pools, which can be used as a daily tool,
or walking stick, to guide you on your own path inward. No book,
teacher, philosophy or system can ever mean more than this, your own
direct experience with your real self, or divinity.
October 2010: In ‘The Secret of Showing Up’ two invaluable distinctions
get drawn: the difference between real change and cut-and-past change
and the difference between showing up in a particular way and simply
showing up. These distinctions can free you up in a number of areas of
life, including exercise, parenting, saving and, in particular, your
relationships with other people and with Divinity. This is a very
important teaching for anyone with the tendency for low energy, or
withdrawal.
November 2010: ‘Working with Rejection’ deals with a topic familiar to
all of us. The reading speaks of both the inevitability and necessity of
rejection to a full, focused life and opens up ways of working with this
experience. It also introduces an extremely useful concept, your ‘bottom
line state of wellbeing’, and suggests that we invest ourselves more in
enhancing this than in attempting to control our circumstances.
Personal Readings and Spiritual Coaching Sessions
A personal, or couple’s, reading is a session where I channel insight from your higher self about what is most dominant in your ‘field’ at that time. This can include patterns you are holding, some of your life themes, blockages in your body, the particular cycle you are in at the time or what thought patterns may be holding you back from feeling free. Usually there is an opportunity to ask specific questions if you wish to, but the reading will take on a particular direction or set of themes right from the start. The energy of these conversations is gentle, incredibly loving yet also full of humour and practical suggestions.
Time required: 1 to 1.5 hours
Cost: R650.00 in office hours. R700.00 after-hours
A spiritual coaching session does not involve direct channelling. It is an opportunity for you to bring specific issues to the session, perhaps those that came up in a previous reading but not necessarily, and to work with my questions and ideas on these. I don’t follow a specific coaching methodology and will work with what comes up in the moment using discussion or physical movement or conscious dreaming or anything else that can move you forward. A warning: I’ve been heard to say ‘I couldn’t give a damn about your success…I’m only interested in your Joy’!
Time required: 50 minutes
Cost: R500.00
A baby blessing, which can be done at a baby shower or as a regular reading, is a conversation with an unborn child. They are normally shorter than an hour, though this depends very much on the chattiness of the child. Best time to have one is between 20 and 35 weeks pregnant.
Time required: 1 hour
Cost: R650.00 in office hours. R700.00 after-hours
Please contact Garrick if you are interested in booking a distance
reading or a one-on-one session in Johannesburg, Cape Town,
Bloemfontein or White River.
It is also available to have a coaching session over
Skype.
Parenting Lightly
I’m delighted to have made available my first ebook: ‘Parenting Lightly – the Five Pillars of Raising Children with Joy’, which can be purchased for R55 from our online store. This book does not examine parenting techniques but, more importantly, a fundamental parenting philosophy. It invites you to be truly available to your child rather than internally enslaved to an idea of who they are supposed to become or what kind of parent you’re supposed to be. I have also turned this approach into a talk if any of you / your networks would be interested.
Bird Cards
For those interested in joining my fascination and work with Jane Toerien’s Bird Cards (www.birdcards.net) I am now stocking these myself and you’re welcome to contact Garrick to purchase them at R300.00 per box set

My Anti-Resolutions
In the last few weeks, my ‘anti-hero self’ has been making more
appearances than normal. She’s the grumpy, dissatisfied, vulnerable me
who snaps at people for taking advantage of her [read: husband and
children] but, equally, keeps on raising the bar in terms of what she
expects of them . Go figure. She’s not that reasonable, but often has a
point, and can be so infernally whiny that a good name for her could be
NAG which, as an anagram of Ang, is neat.
I hardly ever used to let NAG out of the closet but having delved deeply
and personally into Shadow work over the last few years, I now know that
she is vital to my wellbeing, sense of balance and clarity of direction.
Not that I like her, understand, I just know she’s necessary and that I
really should listen to her. Kind of like my gynaecologist. Plus I do
know that she is as intent on releasing humanity into Joy as me. She’s
just not quite so polite about it
I caught NAG making her own version of New Year’s Resolutions. As a
rule, I abhor New Year’s Resolutions but these, I suppose, are palatable
and, in obedience to the New Year’s reading (‘unhide yourselves –
unhide!’), here they are:
1. Get more angry
…….or at least let myself own and feel and express my anger when it’s
authentically there.
2. Cut down on giving
…..when it is not 100% real, inspired and motivated by joy, not by duty
3. Be less responsible
……for things and people that do not need, or desire, my help
4. Eat only for pleasure
…..never for boredom, habit, obligation, or based purely on what clever
experts (other than my body) say
5. Be more selfish
….in claiming lots of time for walking and stillness no matter what the
resistance!
NAG and I will battle these out for the next few months until,
hopefully, we both surrender into wholeness. For those who want to meet
their own versions of NAG, our next Shadow Workshop is on 29 March…..
